Here is a video shot of objects moving downtown. Someone most unceremoniously ran in front of one of my shots and I included it in the video.

Production Strategy

A promising area for me to further examine for Drift 3 would be in the downtown area. When I went on Drift 2 i found that the best pictures I got came from that area. I'm sure there are plenty of interesting sounds there also, because when I walked through residential areas all I got was wind chimes or snow blowers. There wasn't much to offer. I was thinking a good area to investigate would be state street at the north end. water street at the west, the lake at the east and wisconsin avenue at the south. I would just explore all the sounds and images contained here. To limit my image capture strategies I think i am going to take pictures of intersecting angles and maybe some of walls or flat surfaces, and maybe some of moving objects. To limit my sound capturing strategies I want to go for more mechanical sounds than anything. I'm not really looking for birds chirping or dogs barking, i want an industrial feel to my sounds.

1. Are there any cool patterns to discover downtown?

2. If I wait until dusk could I get some really dynamic pictures?

3. Are there any interesting shadows that could be worked with?

4. Could puddles be used to reflect images?

5. Are there any man made things that make interesting shapes?

6. Could traffic movements make for some interesting ideas?

7. Can the wind change a lot of things in a landscape?

8. Could people interfere if too many are outside?

9. Would garbage make for some interesting pictures?

10. Could interfering with nature help develop some good ideas?

My favorite situation to arise during my drifts was in a park by MSOE. I had been walking around for a good amount of time, thinking about how terrible the weather was and how many more pictures I should take. Then I noticed some geese just standing a couple of feet away from the sidewalk near a big tree. They were just eating and making their quacking noises, just taking it easy. It got me thinking, that sure this weather sucked but at least I have an apartment to go home and not have to sleep outside in the freezing cold. It also made me think about how fortunate I am not to have to forage for food. I can just go to walgreens and pick up some food instead of wondering around picking up debris out of the grass to eat. Seeing the geese kind of got me back into the right frame of mind instead of stressing out about getting the project done and back into a warm place. Because as much as life can suck sometimes, at least I didn't have to worry about what geese have to deal with on an everyday basis. And then when hunting season comes around they got a whole lot more things to look out for. Poor geese.

One thing that struck a nerve for me was when I was walking and I saw some segregated schools. I had a class on the subject but never really noticed it. I've seen it at the elementary school on campus but that was then only one. I walked by a couple of other schools that appeared to be segregated. It just got me thinking. Another thing I started thinking about was industrialization and urbanization when I was walking a little north of downtown and I saw all this construction and work being done. There were buildings being put up where trees had been and where animals lived. The final unexpected situation was just the lack of care people show for the environment with cigarette butts. It looked like some people would just daftly throw them without thinking about what they would land on or any hazards it could cause. Sometimes there would be people smoking in front of children, I'm not bashing smoking but i think their should be a little common courtesy. The number of butts on the ground is pretty amazing to if you just stop to look at them all.

The first of my two situations that I felt at particular ease on my first two drifts took place during drift two. I was nearing the end of my drift and I was in downtown. The sun had been covered by clouds for the whole day and for just a couple of minutes there was a break and the sun shone down on this tree with a really great texture. There were just little flakes of bark swaying in the wind with the really great lighting on them. This moment just struck me as what I had been working for on my whole drift and it put me at ease to see some success. My second situation took place on my first drift when I was in a park right next to the river. The wind had been blowing pretty hard all day and I went into a tunnel. When I went into it there it sheltered me from the wind, and it was also producing a really cool ambient wind noise. It was kind of a slow droning noise. It was kind of relaxing like a seashore. Unfortunately it didn't sound too great when I played it back after recording it. It just wasn't a moment that could be captured I guess.

My first situation that aggravated me while on my drifts took place during my sound capturing drift. The problem was wet feet. Since Wisconsin was still enjoying its worst winter in recent history the ice/puddles were everywhere. When i first left for my drift I stepped in a puddle about 2 blocks away from my apartment, it was frustrating but I went back to my apartment to put on some new socks and my spare set of shoes. I went out again this time trying to be more careful to pay attention to the sidewalk, I got about two hours into my walk when I stepped into yet another puddle. There was no turning back at that point so I had to suffer through it. It just made the cold that much worse. The second situation that aggravated me was on drift two. Again it was still winter and it was pretty much bleak, overcast weather the whole time. I didn't really feel that any of my outdoor pictures got a good opportunity to look that great. Most of my pictures looked washed out and grey because of the winter settings. I wanted my pictures to be more dynamic but the weather did not permit that. That really frustrated me.
